Spectacle Lenses
The choice of spectacle lens is a very important part of the process of picking glasses and is something that we take time to ensure all options are discussed and explained before any decisions are made. There are many options available, from practical solutions to cosmetic coatings. Some of the more popular types of lenses are listed below:
- Anti-glare lenses: This coating is very good for drivers, V.D.U. users or those who just want the lenses to look good. This coating reduces the glare that would normally come off a standard lens.
- High-index lenses: If someone has poor vision and needs a strong pair of glasses they can often worry that they might end up with ‘jam-jars’. We can improve the cosmetic appearance of most high prescriptions with hi-index lenses. These lenses are much thinner in appearance than the same power would be if a normal lens were used.
- Varifocal lenses: Many people that need both distance and reading glasses decide on incorporating both pairs of lenses into one frame. Varifocals are taking over somewhat from the older bifocal option because of their cosmetic appearance and the fact that they have a better range of focus.
- Scratch-resistant lenses: As the name suggests this is an extra layer on the lens that makes the surface more robust. Although it does not make the lens anti-scratch, it does help in reducing scratches.
- Photochromic lenses: These are lenses that react and change colour to the amount of U.V. light present in the atmosphere. The lens normally will have a slight tint when indoors and darken when outside. Very good for people with eyes that are sensitive to light.
- Polarised sunglasses: These are sunglasses but have an extra layer which reduces the glaring effect of plane-polarised light. These work very well for drivers and people who spend a lot of time on or by water (i.e. fishermen or sailors).
